The Department of Biophysics invites applicants for the Master’s in Biophysical Chemistry and Design for Biotechnology, an industry-shaping training ground for students eager to become experts in biotechnology and pharmaceutical development. This program focuses on building skills in the theory and application of biophysical chemistry and computation essential in the development of protein and RNA therapeutics. Our curriculum includes training in the physical chemistry of macromolecules, computational analysis and design of macromolecules using physics- and AI-based methods, and lab techniques for screening and stability testing. Our faculty are highly respected in the field, and the coursework includes a mix of cutting-edge instruction and hands-on lab experiences, including a summer lab intensive. Students will train on instruments and software heavily used throughout biotech and pharma.

Attend classes in person, full- or part-time, at the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD, finishing in 10 to 24 months. You’ll study advanced biophysical chemistry via coursework and a hands-on, five-week summer lab intensive, which allows you to train on state-of-the-art instruments and with software used in biotechnology and pharmaceutical development, including: 

  • Linux and Python computer programming 
  • Circular dichroism spectrophotometers 
  • Absorbance and fluorescence spectrophotometers  
  • Scanning and isothermal titrating microcalorimeters 
  • Fluorescence plate reader 
  • Surface plasmon resonance instrument 
  • XLA/XLI analytical ultracentrifuges

Application requirements

Application requirements include the following five items below. Deadline is May 1st with the priority given to those who apply by March 1st. There is a $75 application fee. Standard Johns Hopkins’ graduate admission costs apply. 

  1. Transcripts from all previous university-level study. All applicants must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline and have successfully completed two courses: Calculus I and General Chemistry. Completion of Molecular Biology is preferred but not required.   
  2. Two letters of recommendation. Letters should address the applicant’s propensity for academic work.   
  3. Resume or CV  
  4. Statement of Purpose, including why you are qualified for the program and how it will help with your long-term goals.   
  5. All applicants who have not completed a post-secondary degree involving at least two-years of full-time study in the United States or in an exempt country must take the TOEFL or the IELTS.  The test must have been taken within the previous two years.
